How to Launch a WRC Car the Right Way

It's simpler than you think.

Ever wonder how WRC drivers pull off those perfectly spectacular launches at the beginning of every stage? Luckily for you, Top Gear put together a short video showing you how it's done.

Top Gear's motoring editor Ollie Marriage was fortunate enough to spend some time behind the wheel of Hyundai's World Rally Championship car, the i20 WRC. It's the same sort of car currently competing in the 2019 WRC season at the hands of drivers Thierry Neuville, Andreas Mikkelsen, Sébastien Loeb, and more.

The trick behind getting the perfect launch is pretty simple. After putting the car in first gear, all you have to do is hold the hand brake and have the clutch depressed with your left foot, and your right foot on the throttle, then release the clutch and hand brake at the same exact time to get the perfect launch. It makes for a dirt-ripping, exhaust-screaming scene that we can't get enough of.

So now you know for the next time you have to launch a WRC car. It should come in handy often.
